Write to live, live to write.

AIRBORNE ALL THE WAY Friday, December 18, 2009

Right, you blokes, I realised I haven't posted a single post since the eighth of December, and I completely missed Battle of the Bulge day.
The Battle of the Bulge was actually the name given by the popular public to Operation Wacht Am Rhein, German for Watch on the Rhine. It was Hitler's last, biggest gamble (perhaps influenced by the 20th July plot to assassinate him) and many of the Generals recognized that he wouldn't achieve his goal (blitzkrieg all the way to Antwerp, get supplies and win the war!). Nobody stopped him though, and on the sixteenth of December 1944 Colonel Jochen Peiper and his Panzers attacked in full force across the mountainous area of the Ardennes forest. The Krauts achieved complete surprised (helped by poor Allied intelligence and Allied overconfidence) and inflicted a lot of casualties on the Americans, making it one of the worst and most costly battles the US have ever fought.
This is the part where one of the shortest speeches (but one of the well-remembered ones) comes in: General Anthony McAuliffe of the 101st Airborne defending Bastogne replied to a request by the Germans to surrender, "NUTS!"
Now, you're probably wondering what this has got to do with anything. The answer is it doesn't have anything to do with anything and everything to do with nothing. While you figure out that sentence I'll leave you and only post again two weeks later. Merry Christmas, everybody. If you see a fat, red figure sliding down your chimney or climbing through your window, get a big shotgun and blast away. Santa Claus may very well be Santa Money-or-your-life, and it's best not to take chances.
