AIRBORNE ALL THE WAY Wednesday, November 26, 2008

You know, one day we were walking around Thompson (or Thomson, I've never figured out which) Plaza, I saw this weird looking man in a tight gray shirt holding a baby.
I say weird looking because his face was not only fat, ugly, but unshaven. He looked like a neanderthal.
I soon realised that saying he looked like a neanderthal was actually paying him a compliment.
As you probably realised now, this man I was looking at was the famous - or infamous - big yellow object that contributes to the making of Ice Lemon Tea.
Yes, this was Mr. Infamous C.T.C.K. (I can't name him for the sake of naming him over here, he might sue me. Go figure.)
Jeez, he looked like he hadn't shaved for weeks. I'm sure right after school finished he stopped shaving. And that shirt - ! Makes me think of those days we used to see tight shirt after tight shirt.
I wanted to get a picture, but he went into a baby shop. Now, I couldn't go in there. What excuse would I have? Besides, he was coming straight at me now. I wanted to pass the phone to my brother, who could've taken the shot, but he was already inside following Neanderthal.
I got a blurry picture as he went down the escalator, but it could've been any fat, ugly person wearing a gray shirt and carrying a baby so I deleted that. (Speaking of which, we saw many fat ugly people wearing gray shirts and carrying babies. Were they all a bid to disguise the true Neanderthal?)

Today I watched Saving Private Ryan. (Thus the title, which incorporates both events into one. Clever, eh?) Two words:
BLOODY AWESOME.
Behind Band of Brothers (Which can be considered a movie, albeit a nine hour long one) this is probably my favourite war movie. Beats even A Bridge Too Far, which is good in its own right. The Omaha beach scene is absolutely amazing, blood and gore everywhere, although it isn't as bloody as I hoped it would be. Some of the scenes which I supposedly "got" from SPR, although I hadn't watched it at that time, for my Bloody Omaha story weren't exactly featured. But it was still awesome.
Then came the pushing inland and finding Private Ryan part. That part really gives us the feel of war - all the stupid stupidity of it. As one reviewer put it, it's a "Perfect portrayal of the insane stupidity of war and the anguish of all who enter this most foolish of enterprises." It shows why people fight, and how futile it is.
One character that I like was that of Corporal Upham. He's a clerk but got dragged along because he's also a translator. Caused the death of two of his friends because he wasn't brave enough to shoot his gun. But in the end he matured and shot the German straight in the noggin. Typical American Bravado.
But it's a brilliant show and a must see for anyone (like me) who either loves war, hates war, or both loves and hates war.
Does that make sense?

1944: Germany begins V1 and V2 attacks on Antwerp in Belgium.

~Quote of the Day~
You can manufacture weapons, and you can buy ammunition. But you can't buy valor, and you can't pull heroes off an assembly line.
