AIRBORNE ALL THE WAY Wednesday, November 5, 2008

Well, the American elections are over.
And I have to say this election is the only election I've actually studied in minute detail.
I didn't for the Singapore elections (mainly because they were so boring). Guess that makes me the great Un-Patriot.
But, well, in the end the results were pretty much as expected. Barack Obama, with the landslide victory.
It really isn't John McCain's fault. It's just that he appears to be a short old man with a Vietnam war record from the same party as George Bush.
And of course, everyone hates George Bush.
In the end, McCain made a pretty good speech about how they should now unite and save America from the ecenomic crisis. Not spiteful to Obama or anything, in fact pretty happy for him.
On his part, Obama made a great, charismatic speech about how they could, in his words, "put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American Dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth - that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism, and doubt, and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes We Can. "
Well, Obama quoted Winston Churchill in the "This is your Victory" part, and Lincoln twice. Which is fun but just a side note. And McCain kind of paraphrased Eisenhower's note in case D-Day failed when he said "the fault is mine, not yours".
Another side note: Everyone seems to love ending their speeches with "Thank you, Good night, God bless you all, and God bless America" or something like that. Bush did it, Obama did it, McCain did it. Pretty funny.

Today I got up at 7 AM and went down for breakfast. At 0900 I went down at switched on the TV and watched the news (Channel News Asia's continuous coverage of the elections) for the longest time in my life, all the way until 1235. I even brought down a piece of paper, wrote down all the fifty states, and when either Obama or McCain won that state I'd draw either a donkey or an elephant respectively besides it. But at 1235 my mom dragged us off to go to Novena square, just fifteen odd minutes before Obama's speech. In the car I got my mom to switch on the radio and turned it to BBC (It's not funny) where I got snatches of the speech as well as lots of noise and partying in the background where the reporters were reporting.
Then I went for guitar class, and on the way home got to listen to more of Obama's speech.
Heh. "Seized by American Political fervour" might not be the exact term to describe it, but it sort of comes pretty close.

This has been a historical event, the first black president ever in the history of the United States of America. And it took a long time coming, but it finally came. I congratulate Mr. Obama for that. He has done his family, his supporters, his country, his people, and non-racism proud.

Another thing I wanted to mention. At the end of Mr. Obama's speech, there is a scene in which Joe Biden, senator of Delaware and now Vice President of the United States, comes on stage and exchanges a hug with Obama. That to me is a perfect picture of non-racism. A black man and a white man, arm in arm, waving to the crowd - the symbol of non-racism, of a new hope, of a new era and a new life for all Americans.

~Quote of the Day~
"This is your Victory!"
-Winston Churchill speaking to the crowd on VE Day, just like Obama would do 63 and a half years later to his supporters.
